Obama government wants to change its online gambling policy once and for all, following a preliminary report issued by the European Commission. The EC report found that the United States had an unfair and discriminatory policy in place that went against WTO rules and regulations.

Jeffrey Sandman, speaking for the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative said: “The European Commission investigation further highlights the need for the Obama Administration and Congress to regulate Internet gambling not only to protect consumers, but in order to restore integrity to the international trade system,”.

EU Trade Commsission released the findings of its 1 year investigation into the legality the U.S.’s ban on online gaming. The report asserts that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, a U.S. law that requires American financial institutions to block payments to online casinos, poker rooms and bookmakers, violates World Trade Organization agreements between the U.S. and Europe.

The investigation, launched last March, found that the UIGEA violates trade rules because it does not ban domestic online gaming companies from operating in the U.S. American companies .

Many European online gaming companies suffered a loss of market value because of the U.S. law, the commission’s report does not suggest the EU file a formal complaint with the WTO. Instead, it suggests a negotiated solution with the Obama administration.
